Ashlie and Joe tied the knot on May 16, 2015 in Ashlie's uncle's backyard in Emerald Isle, NC. Justin and I have been anticipating this wedding all year since we have been friends with Ashlie for a decade and became friends with Joe when they started dating a few years ago. Ashlie is a fellow UNC Photojournalism grad, and we have shared all sorts of epic photo adventures with her since 2005. We couldn't imagine a better life partner for Ashlie than Joe and are absolutely stoked to share these photos of their celebration!
Ashlie and Joe answered some questions for us about their wedding and photography experience. We love how thoughtful their responses are: read below! And to view all of the photos from Ashlie + Joe's wedding and order prints, please visit their wedding gallery on my online print shop!
1. What are some of your favorite things about your partner? How were these attributes expressed during or leading up to your wedding?
Ashlie: Joe is very laid-back, open and free. As usual, I fluttered around our reception, as did he, often glancing at each other, occasionally coming together in celebration. Our sentiment is often simple by nature. The one area where his expression isn’t subtle is in his love for me. He showers me with it, constantly, and during our wedding celebration, he was bold in his expression of his love. Singing to me was a beautiful surprise.
2. What are 2 fun facts about you and Joe?
Ashlie: I like to travel without an itinerary or reservations. I never thought there would be another human being in this world I would love more than I love myself.
3. What was most important to you in planning your wedding?
The most important part about planning our wedding was making sure that we created an event that would emphasize our love for each other and the importance of our family and friends, the community that surrounds us. We believe that the strength we’ve found in each other is amplified by the support of our community and we wanted our celebration to reflect that sentiment.
4. Are there any details or moments from your wedding that are particularly special to you? (E.g., you wore your momma’s dress, your partner unexpectedly serenaded you, there was a double rainbow all across the sky…).
The Peace Lilies in each bouquet came from the plants that were given at my Grandmother and Grandfather’s funerals. My mother and I propagated all the succulents that were used for table decorations and for the guys. Joe sang a song called “Ashley” by the Dodos to me. It was beautiful and very special.
5. What factors other than photos went into your decision on a wedding photographer? Why did you pick us?
You guys were the obvious choice for me. Justin has known me for well over 10 years and he knows me, my nature. I believe that together you represent the full spectrum of what we wanted aesthetically. Additionally, you are both fun and enthusiastic about your work, which is important. I couldn’t imagine anyone else taking the photographs at our wedding. Side note: you are both very, very good at disappearing into the background. You blend in so well while you are working, it really is quite impressive. There were a couple of times when I just stopped and watched you, just for a second. It made me happy.
6. Was there a particular individual or vendor who helped you to achieve the vision for your wedding?
7. What is the first thing you want to do with the images? Wallpaper the hallway? Internet fame?
Joe and I plan to make a commitment to really take some time to go through all the images. We’ll probably put them up on our big screen and relive the wedding all over again. We don’t really have any specific plans for the images, but I am certain we’ll want to find the perfect place to display one or two.
8. What is next for you as a couple? Any big plans?
We’re headed to Iceland later this summer. We both have new jobs and Joe starts graduate school at UNC in late August. We are full-steam ahead in Life and it is wonderful.
Ashlie + Joe, thank you so much for allowing us to be your wedding photographers! It's truly special to photograph the people we care about most in life, and I won't forget the long weekend spent with you and your community this May. Enjoy the pictures!
