Katie + Jeff tied the knot in Katie's historic childhood home in Lawndale, NC on October 11, 2014. I photographed a wedding in beautiful Lawndale earlier this year and was ecstatic to return to the area. I loved the charm of Katie's home and how relaxed everyone one was throughout the day. Read the Q&A with this laid-back couple below to learn more about their backyard wedding and photography experience!
1. What was your favorite moment from the day?
The moment we were officially married! And Jeff’s friend Ben’s buck-dance at the reception. Spectacular!
2. What factors led to your decision in having a backyard wedding? What advice do you have for other couples planning a backyard wedding?
My family has owned the property where we were married for over 160 years. It is a very sentimental place with a rich history and is full of memories. I was able to refinish a 130-year-old set of columns to get married beneath, which were salvaged from my great grandmother's house after it burned in the 1970s. I could not think of a more ideal place to get married. If I could offer a piece of advice I would say do not stress over details and things you cannot control. It may rain, it happens. You cannot control everything. People will not remember what centerpieces you used or your first dance song. However, they will remember good food & drinks and fun with friends & family. Just remember why you’re there – to get married!
3. What factors other than photos went into your decision on a wedding photographer? Why did you decide to pick me?
A cousin from my side of the family had worked with you at her wedding. We were very impressed with your work and knew that you would be wonderful to work with. We looked at other weddings that you had shot and fell in love with your style. We knew that you would be dependable and trustworthy.
4. From booking to delivery of images and seeing the results, what in your mind made it the right choice for us to collaborate? Did anything surprise you?
After the first conversation with Courtney I knew that she would be a great fit for us. She is the type of person that makes you feel relaxed, which is very important trait for a wedding photographer. Courtney and Justin were very organized and easy to work with which solidified my feelings for making the right choice to hire them. They both worked quickly but efficiently and were highly prepared. I was surprised with their creativity to capture different shots at the wedding that I never would have thought of. They did a wonderful job of capturing the moment while incorporating nature backdrops and were very aware of the right lighting. Within a couple of days Courtney posted a preview picture, which we really enjoyed.
5. What’s next for you as a couple?
We are getting ready to leave for our honeymoon to Italy, Switzerland, and India. We are also closing on a farm this week. It has been one crazy month with lots of life changing events but we are beyond excited about our future.
6. Anything else you'd like to add about your wedding? :)
We had more fun than I imagined! Our friends and family really came together to make this day special. We are so grateful to have so many thoughtful, kind people in our lives.
Katie and Jeff, Justin and I enjoyed every minute of our weekend in Lawndale with your family and friends. Everyone's kindness and warmth made our jobs a breeze. It was a joy to document your day, and we are so excited to share these images with you!
